As a little kid, I couldn't wait to open up the Courier-Journal and draw Hugh Haynie's political cartoon. I dreamed of growing up and making a living doing social commentary just like the late Hugh Haynie did. On September 30, 2013, I finally got a chance to peek into the long-vacated political cartoonist office on the Courier-Journal's 3rd floor. Mr. Haynie was succeeded by Nick Anderson, who went on to win a Pulitzer Prize for his cartooning. Anderson now works for the Houston Chronicle. Standing in this little office today, I imagined the swirling creative pressure that bore down on both Haynie and Anderson as deadlines approached.
