Our partisan media in a nutshell: false equivalency
Five-time Super Bowl champs the New England Patriots visited the White House yesterday. Some players choose to politicize the moment by announcing that they won't attend to show opposition to President Donald Trump. The New York Times tweeted comparison photos from 2017 to the Patriots' last visit in 2015 when Barack Obama was in office. Patriots' turnout for President Obama in 2015 vs. Patriots' turnout for President Trump today: https://t.co/OxMEOqZonI pic.twitter.com/pLmJWhOw1j— NYT Sports (@NYTSports) April 19, 2017 One problem. The arrangements were significantly different but left out of the N.Y. Times demeaning visual comparison. These photos lack context. Facts: In 2015, over 40 football staff were on the stairs. In 2017, they were seated on the South Lawn. https://t.co/iIYtV0hR6Y— New England Patriots
SNL uses Kentucky as backdrop for clueless Trump love
NBC's Saturday Night Live skewered Kentuckians (clueless, inaccurate accents, Wal-Mart clothing) for supporting insincerely coal-conscious President Donald Trump. The positioning is that Kentuckians voted against their own interests by electing a leader who uses their lack of understanding to boost his own political scorecard. Of course Trump won in Democrat-heavy states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio but SNL gets better laughs torching Kentucky. If the Kentucky sketch was a misdirection that ignores heavy Trump resistance in Louisville, Lexington, and Northern Kentucky, the parody of a New York cable news host was on point. SNL offered a brilliant takedown of embattled Fox News host Bill O'Reilly. Saturday Night Live tossed Alec Baldwin n the dual role of both Trump and O'Reilly.
McConnell confirms his intention to use the nuclear option to confirm SCOTUS nominee Neil Grouch
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell confirms that he is prepared to use the so-called nuclear option, changing traditional rules of the Senate to allow for a simple majority vote to confirm U.S. Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch. In a WHAS radio interview with me, McConnell noted that the longstanding tradition of requiring a supermajority of 60 aye votes was overrun in 2013 by then-majority leader Sen. Harry Reid. Democrats point out that Reid's use of the nuclear option was to advance lower court appointments, not Supreme Court nominees. Here is the entire WHAS interview, which also covers whether superpowers should intervene following Syrian chemical attacks, if GOP in-fighting will wither 2018 election hopes, health care upgrades, tax reform, and
AUDIO: Gov. Matt Bevin on his first legislative session with Republican control of both houses
Governor Matt Bevin had a busy day vetoing three bills from the Republican-led state legislature as its session nears an end. He took time (during a power outage no less) to talk about the vetoes, President Trump's executive order dismantling President Obama's EPA regulations, if charter schools mean resegregation, the GOP health care meltdown, mental health issues, and whether drones would soon fly pizzas right into our TV rooms.
Air Force One ushers in President Trump’s Louisville health care rally
President Donald J Trump brought his health care rally to Louisville tonight. A rousing crowd waited all day to enter Freedom Hall to hear the president talk about the GOP plans to replace Obamacare, build a Mexico border wall, and even clown on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick's handlers now have him saying that he will stand during national anthem presentations but so far no team has picked him up. I know very little about political gamesmanship but am always intrigued by Air Force One. Here's the approach and landing on Runway 17L at Louisville International Airport videotaped by Bill Weller. Governor Matt Bevin tweeted this pic after meeting with The Donald aboard AF1. If I ever get the chance
Yes he is your President
"The most important office in our democracy: citizen." - Barack Obama's eloquent farewell speech, January 10, 2017 ____________ Hey Meryl Streep. Sometimes your team wins. Sometimes your team loses. Suck it up, buttercup. A love of football and/or mixed martial arts does not define anyone's politics. America is a melting pot of all kinds of personal interests not necessarily aligned with any political philosophy. Don't blame your team's losing strategy on the other team. Sometimes you're simply overmatched. Millions of people who voted for Barack Obama in 2008 then again in 2012 decided to try a different strategy in 2016. See: Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania Donald J. Trump is about to be inaugurated as the 45th President of the
A troublemaker named Trump was foreseen in the 1950s
"It's funny how a big lie can make us all feel like kids again." A 1950s TV western featured a guy named Trump who tried to con citizens into building a wall in order to save the world. Then there's the story of the rich gamblin' man and the poor who "ain't got no home." Woody Guthrie's "Old Man Trump" is a direct reference to Donald Trump's father Fred, who was Guthrie's landlord in Brooklyn. Dude. Time machine?
