Some of my friends weighed in on today’s tragedy (see adjacent thread). Now I see their wisdom. Let’s have all school teachers trained with semi-automatic weapons pointed at the classroom door so that each time a person enters, the teacher can cease instructing and then call out “Friend or Foe?” If the teacher gets no answer or the child forgets that day’s code word, the best thing to do would be to shoot first and ask questions later. Better to be safe than sorry. I mean, that COULD HAVE been a mass murderer coming in, or just an 8-year-old delivering a poster tube. Sure, police officers receive ongoing weapons training yet some of them are still killed in the line of duty. Arming teachers with sporadic training is GENIUS. I stand corrected. Please ignore my previous posts. Armed teachers. Brilliant!

You don’t know me so don’t even attempt to declare what I would do. It is clear that most people who are not routinely trained for SWAT situations would not react with deadly force in time to quash a mass murder situation. This fantasy of everyday citizens going about their genteel lives and suddenly morphing into Clint Eastwood in an instant to save lives while proficiently killing an armor wearing attacker is just that…a macho fantasy. Get real.

The solution to the problem is way easier than trying to out law all guns and collecting them. Pass a law that the media can never cover an event like this. Pretty simple….You say that violates your 1 st amendment rights?? What about my 2nd??

What about a pattern of mass murders with semi-automatic weapons? Not just school kids, but mall shoppers, Sikh temple worshippers, pedestrians, factory workers, and a congresswoman. How do we solve America’s chronic problem of the mass slaughter of innocents?

If the Media (News Papers, Radio, and TV) NEVER EVER reported on them, it would not happen. These people want the attention. They want to make a name for themselves. In a way, you can blame the media just as much as the guns. Actually, you can blame the Media more. The media makes a conscience decision to do what they do even though THEY KNOW it will result in more of these things happening, the gun does what it’s told.

It’s really sad that after today’s horrific tragedy that people are now arguing about gun control. Whether one is entitled to own a gun is immaterial and unimportant. What matters is that 20 innocent little angels lost their lives today In a senseless, evil act. Now is not the time for debating or arguing. It is a time for mourning the loss of precious lives cut short before they even got started.
It is a time for prayer and outpouring of support for those parents who faced every parent’s nightmare today. Each of us needs to thank God for our beautiful children, hug and kiss them, and tell them we love them. Debate your stances about guns another day. For now, make the most of every second you get to see your children’s faces and mourn for those parents having to identify their children among the victims of such a despicable act. God bless us all and hold us in his arms in this, our time of need.

Now is absolutely the time to discuss it. Tomorrow brings different diversions. The pain softens. People go back to complacency and then some coward in body armor walks into a restaurant and kills another dozen people. And you’ll say: “Now is not the time for debating or arguing. It is a time for mourning the loss of precious lives cut short” No, Jeremy. It happens over and over and over. Let’s talk this one out.

No, Terry, the pain will never soften for those parents identifying the remains of their sons or daughters instead of helping them with homework. Talk it out? Terry, maybe instead of talking we could all start praying. There are a lot of people who need it now more than ever. It’s more important to send thoughts and prayers than to try to be the next sound bite.

And, for the record I own exactly zero guns of any kind. I am a believer that not everyone has the right to own a gun and twisting the second amendment doesn’t justify owning tools of death.

The pain never softens for the families touched by the Aurora movie theater, Ft. Hood, Standard Gravure, Oregon Mall, Columbine, etc. That’s the fadeaway line after every event. It’s “too soon” to talk about it. No it isn’t. Change must come because these events are insanely common in our culture. Prayer is wonderful but tangible human action is also necessary to affect change.

I agree that action is necessary. We are an apathetic nation, considered only with our own selfish wants. We should come together, supporting each other rather than fighting. I agree wholeheartedly that change is necessary. It is time for an awakening. If you want to speak out for gun control, you’ll have no stronger supporter than me. I just thought we should take time to grieve and heal first.

All we can do to help heal is learn to be more respectful of each and every person’s opinion. But we must act in order to protect the culture at large. Clearly, people see any change to the gun culture as either a blessing or a threat. We have much to do.
