Kentucky governor and Louisville mayor twitter spar over protester suggesting someone stab Mitch McConnell to death

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin tweeted his dismay that Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer would allow protesters to hurl death threats outside the home of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The protest was led by Black Lives Matter activist Chanelle Helms who screams the f-word throughout the two-hour late evening protest. Helms is known for her screed urging white people to give up their homes to black families as a form of reparation for slavery.

Mayor Fischer responded to Governor Bevin the next morning on Twitter, referring to the protest as a peaceful assembly protected under the First Amendment.

Peaceful? No. Death threats are not acceptable forms of expression.

McConnell’s office replied to media inquiries:

“Liberal activists like the Democratic Socialists of Louisville know how to try to create good street theatre, and as an avid supporter of the First Amendment, Senator McConnell believes that all citizens have the right to express their opinions peacefully. I hope Senator McConnell’s neighbors weren’t too inconvenienced.”

McConnell is working from home after suffering a fractured shoulder from a fall at his Louisville home.

Seriously, @GovMattBevin, in America we allow for peaceful assembly and freedom of speech. Sorry if that embarrasses you. Let’s get to work to stop the tragic loss of so many lives in our country due to gun violence. https://t.co/ro1EBkdFjv
