University of Louisville athletics director Vince Tyra did an extensive interview with me on 840WHAS regarding the complete shutdown of sports during the global coronavirus pandemic. Vince had a lot to say about the financial challenges his department faces, how to keep student athletes engaged during the down time, responsibilities for coaches, and a message for fans left hanging in limbo. Here’s @vincetyra on responsibilities for UofL student athletes and coaches during #COVID19 shutdown, financial challenges going forward, more 🏀🏈⚾️ @840WHAS audio https://t.co/zOQTbjSdnM @theacc @ncaa pic.twitter.com/hFScKsHNOk— Terry Meiners (@terrymeiners) March 17, 2020 I also asked Tyra for comment on Rick Pitino's new statement that he "deserved to be fired" by the University of Louisville. Dan McDonnell, Vince Tyra, and the Louisville team chaplain took care of business after UofL’s loss
Russ Brown writes in Kentucky Today that University of Louisville baseball coach Dan McDonnell had a come-to-Jesus meeting with his pitcher Luke Smith following Friday's profane outburst. The nationally televised college world series game showed Smith repeatedly shouting F-You and "sit in your f-ing dugout" taunts. The Louisville pitcher stared him down and let him hear it 😳 pic.twitter.com/qrnX1Z0EGq— ESPN (@espn) June 22, 2019 Even if Vanderbilt players were throwing verbal jabs at him, all the TV audience saw was profanity from the Louisville guy. It was a kick in the head for an already beleaguered UofL image following several years of scandals. Good on Coach Mac. Here's part of the report. --------------- Once again...to all the grownups who applaud Luke Smith's
1st world problem: my free seats aren’t good enough
A few days before the University of Louisville football team opened its 2018 season with a nationally televised battle against #1 Alabama, an unnecessary upheaval derailed the focus from football. The son of former athletics director Tom Jurich attacked the new athletics director over a future seating matter that should have been handled by whomever negotiated the the elder Jurich's severance package. Mark Jurich sent a scathing email debasing his former close friend Vince Tyra, the new athletics director who replaced Mark's dad Tom Jurich. The email, printed below, is filled with vicious personal attacks all wrapped around the notion of "disrespect" shown to Tyra's predecessor. Tom Jurich and his loyal son Mark both believe that Tyra "schemed for over a
Rick Pitino on his firing and UofL’s “smear” of Tom Jurich
In his first comprehensive interview since being fired at the University of Louisville, Rick Pitino defended Tom Jurich against what he called the UofL administration's "smear" tactics. He also talked about "Coach 1" Jordan Fair, controlling his employees, David Padgett's new Cardinals team, board chairman David Grissom & the board of trustees' agenda, severance money for both Pitino and Jurich, his adidas lawsuit, thoughts for Cards fans, and much more #L1C4 From the Courier-Journal: "Did Pitino throw Jordan Fair under the bus?" Pop the popcorn. Here is the entire half hour conversation. We, the hazy future of Louisville
Tom Jurich and Rick Pitino have both been fired with cause. Pitino’s sixteen year term was burdened by multiple scandals. That’s cause. More litigation to come as Pitino's lawyer promised "a bare knuckle fight." Earlier today, Jurich was offered a relatively miniscule buyout if he resigned before the University of Louisville board of trustees voted to fire him. He declined the offer and was then told the school is considering filing a lawsuit against him. No other details were given. Legal teams for both Pitino and Jurich were given very short appearances before the boards. Pitino lawyer Steve Pence said he had "a well prepared and solid one hour presentation" at Monday's hearing yet there wasn't "a
