The Commonwealth is drowning in incessant squabbling over who has the authority to dismiss or staff boards of trustees at its public universities. Some think the University of Louisville’s accreditation could be in jeopardy.

The “old” University of Louisville board of trustees just met as the newly appointed board sits on the sidelines.

Wait…who’s in charge? This demands a closer historical examination.

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin says his predecessor Steve Beshear doled out trustee positions to his donors. Beshear’s son Andy, the Kentucky attorney general, has sued to stop his father’s successor.

The truth is that proportional representation is required by law yet “donor constituencies” get these coveted slots.

Bevin argued on my show that a Franklin County circuit judge overreached in halting the new governor’s attempt to dismantle and replace the University of Louisville board installed by Beshear.

Judge gonna judge. Governor gonna governate. Trustees gonna trusternate.
